Dear Parishioners,

In October 2021, Pope Francis opened a worldwide “Synod” process. The goal of the Synod is to assist the Church in coming to a deeper understanding and living out of the full cooperation of the clergy and lay faithful in the mission of the Church, and to continue the reorientation of the clergy and the laity toward a greater sense of participation in the mission of the Church.

During Lent, American Martyrs asked our community to participate in Listening Sessions as part of the Synod. The Synod process is one that listens to and collaborates with all people, discerning what the Spirit is saying through them.

  • We held 22 LISTENING SESSIONS with a total of 442 participants following the outline provided by the Los Angeles Archdiocese.
  • Once complete, we provided a SYNOPSIS OF OUR FINDINGS to the Regional Coordinators, who then synthesized the data received from the parishes within the San Pedro Region and forwarded it to the Archdiocese. These consolidation processes will continue as our responses move throughout the levels of the church, culminating in topics that will be discussed during the Synod of Bishops in Rome in October of 2023.
  • After we submitted our synopsis, we continued the listening process with the PARISH PULSE SURVEY receiving 556 responses. These will be used within our parish to determine our best ministerial response.

As we move forward, our Church Leadership and Laity will continue to listen and learn to ensure we are a healthy, mission-driven parish. This is where a shift in mindset is required, to recognize that the clergy and laity have shared responsibility for the Church's well-being and action as disciples of the Lord, Jesus Christ.

The synodal process has allowed the Spirit of God to work in and through us in a powerful way. It has created an atmosphere of openness that will continue to foster greater unity within our Church, as we listen to each other on a deeper, more spiritual level. I look forward to continuing to foster a true “Listening Church” as I walk forward with you

God bless you always,
Msgr. John F. Barry

Parish Pulse Survey

Following the Listening sessions, an American Martyrs Parish Pulse Survey was developed to address many of the topics discussed within the Listening Sessions. While not all members had the time to attend the 2-hour sessions, we wanted to provide the opportunity for all voices to be heard. From May 21 – June 6, 2022, a total of 555 people participated in this anonymous Parish Pulse Survey. Based on the open-ended comments, we know some respondents participated in both the Listening Sessions and the Parish Pulse Survey.

This report was submitted to the Synod San Pedro Region Coordinators. Information in this report is only a fraction of the 44 hours of discussion that took place here at American Martyrs. Since we were asked to follow a template format, many of the open-ended comments were not included in what was submitted. The following is presented to you as was submitted April 25, 2022.

Summary of Listening Sessions

This report includes a full summary of all the areas discussed within the American Martyrs Listening Sessions. All quotes included were based on the Note Takers synopsis of the statement. While all information was not submitted to the Archdiocese for review, the American Martyrs leadership have been provided this information and are discussing areas of improvement, to ensure the health of our parish.
